FedWeb was first introduced in 1995 by the World Wide Web Federal Consortium. Back then it was know as the Federal Webmaster's Workshop. The consortium was a collaboration of 10 federal agencies that pooled their resources to fund research and education of the internet for the federal government.
Over time the program evolved and has included topics of interest to not only webmasters but also web managers, designers, programmers and policy makers. Topics have included security, privacy, programming languages, content management, accessibility, usability, writing for the web, network management, staffing, databases, and email, to name just a few.
The hallmark of FedWeb is that each program is designed by and for the Government Internet Professional. Workshop sessions topics are selected by a planning committee of government and industry representatives to address the hottest topics facing government internet professionals. Speakers and session content is focused on providing practical solutions through peer-to-peer sharing, case studies and expert advice.
